Integrated Wealth & Tax Management: Frequently Asked Questions
What does it mean to have wealth management and tax planning under one roof?
For clients who choose Hilltop to manage both their wealth management and tax planning, It means one team handles both, and neither one works in the dark. At Hilltop, the advisor managing your portfolio and the tax professional preparing your return sit in the same firm and share the same client file. So a Roth conversion, a capital gain, or a business distribution gets evaluated for its tax consequence before it happens — not discovered the following April by a CPA who was never told. That coordination is the whole point of integrated wealth and tax planning.
How is this different from hiring a financial advisor and a CPA separately?
With separate providers, coordination can become your job. You may find yourself relaying information between two offices or making investment decisions before the tax implications have been fully considered. Hilltop removes that handoff: planning, investment management, tax preparation, and bookkeeping happen inside one firm with one shared view of your situation. You are not asked to be the go-between, and nothing important depends on two professionals happening to talk to each other. See how our advisory and tax teams work together.
What is tax-integrated retirement planning?
Tax-integrated retirement planning builds your retirement income plan and your tax strategy at the same time, as one plan. Rather than deciding how much to withdraw and then asking what it costs in taxes, it works in the other direction: which accounts to draw from, in what order, and in which years, so that the tax bill across your whole retirement is lower — not just the bill for any single year. Our retirement planning team builds these plans alongside our in-house tax professionals.
What is included in comprehensive wealth management at Hilltop?
Financial planning, investment management, tax planning, tax preparation, bookkeeping, payroll, retirement income planning, Social Security timing, and coordination with your estate attorney and insurance professionals. Hilltop brings these services together, which means clients don’t have to manage relationships with multiple providers who may not be communicating with one another. Explore our full range of services.
How do integrated wealth services simplify managing multiple accounts?
Most people accumulate accounts rather than choose them — an old 401(k) here, an IRA there, a taxable brokerage account, a business account. Integrated management treats them as one portfolio with one strategy, so asset allocation, rebalancing, and withdrawal sequencing are decided across all of them rather than inside each one separately. It also means one point of contact, one annual review, and one team that already knows what you own. Start with our investment strategy.
Is Hilltop a fiduciary, and how are your fees structured?
Yes. As a registered investment adviser*, Hilltop has a fiduciary duty to act in your best interest. Investment management fees are charged as a percentage of assets under management, tiered so that the rate decreases as assets grow, and they are billed transparently rather than taken through product commissions. Tax and bookkeeping work is scoped separately at fixed fees. Insurance products offered or sold are paid commission. Full fee detail is in our Form ADV Part 2A — ask us for it directly at any time.
*Registration does not imply a certain level of skill or training.
Do you coordinate with my existing CPA, attorney, or estate planner?
Yes. Some clients move everything to Hilltop; others keep a long-standing CPA or estate attorney and want us to work alongside them. Both are fine. With your consent, we will share the information your other professionals need, participate in joint conversations, and make sure investment and tax decisions account for the estate documents already in place. If you would rather consolidate, our in-house tax and accounting team can take that work over on your schedule.
